Founded in 1670, Charleston is the oldest city between Virginia and Florida. It was the first capital of the Carolinas and of South Carolina. The young settlement on the west bank of the Ashley River was named Charles Town for King Charles II of England. In 1672, plantation owners Henry Hugues and John Coming donated half their land on Oyster Point between the Ashley and Cooper Rivers and the city was relocated across the Ashley River to the peninsula. The spelling of the city was changed in 1720 to Charlestown. After the American Revolution (1783), the current spelling, Charleston, was adopted.
